Gaea, The Mad Titan: A fan
site
I first read the trilogy in 1987 (I was fifteen if you want to do the math). To this day I have no idea why I picked up Titan, but on reading it I was simply captivated by the incredible nature of the environment described. As an artist, I wanted to "see" this place - the curve of the land arcing upwards, the mighty cables holding the world together...
Trying to draw it was hopeless, the scale and perspective were simply too much
for me to properly comprehend. In 1989, while living with a Joan
Jett-worshiping commune in San Francisco, I was introduced to the Mac program
Swivel 3D - and promptly froze an Apple SE2 trying to model Gaea. I then built
models out of 3x5 cards and tape to use as drawing references. Not terribly
usable, but fun to play with.
Over the years, I kept coming back to the problem of how to visualize the Mad
Titan. The internet opened up worlds. Not finding any Gaean vistas, I looked
for software to try and render her. I assumed making a torus in 3D was fairly
easy. Not so, apparently. I've learned a lot about modeling, rendering,
texturing, and animating - all basically so I could tackle this one daunting
challenge. Once the digital model was completed I really didn't do much else
with it until recently. I played around with texturing the floor a little,
searched for ways to display terrain geometry onto the inside of a cylinder...
A friend has generously put together a site for my comic art ventures,
Blackwolf
Comics and I now use some of that space for the
Gaea
site, so I'm back to working fairly intensively on the project again. I have a
lot of plans for the eventual content (a Gaean viewer, Gaean clock, lots of art
- both digital and drawn...). For now, check back every so often to see what's
new and feel free to
contact
me with any questions, comments, or critiques at.
Enjoy.
