Let me explain... © 2004-2008 by John Varley; all rights reserved |
I’ve been compiling this list for a while now, hoping eventually to have a list of all the movies I’ve seen, ever. Probably never happen, but at least I will try to keep up with the new ones.
Often I’m not bothering with long examinations of the big films everybody’s heard of and most of you have probably seen. A simple thumbs up or a Bronx cheer usually suffices, unless I really, really loved it or really, really hated it. And my rule of comedy is never to precisely recommend a comic film; I usually report only whether we laughed or didn’t laugh, as everybody laughs at different things and I’d hate for someone to go see a comedy on my recommendation only to find that it isn’t funny at all.
One thing I have done is to highlight the less known films in RED. These are the ones you’re apt to come upon while trolling the shelves of the video rental store, desperate because you’ve already seen everything you know you want to see, everything you know anything about, and you pick up a box of some small, obscure thing from Nepal or Kurdistan or even England, or a Sundance-type low-budget thing, and you wonder ... is this a waste of money? We enjoy foreign films, subtitles don’t bother us, which is good, as some of the very best films we’ve seen over the years are not in English. So here are my opinions of them, for what it’s worth.
A short review doesn’t mean the film isn’t worth watching, only that I can’t think of anything very new to say about it. And some reviews may be longer than the movie might seem to deserve, simply because it has sparked some thoughts about cinema and filmmaking.
Lee went through putting in the links. She also frequently changed the pronoun "I" to "we," if she agreed with my assessment. She also added differing opinions in PURPLE.
